What Are Plantar Warts?
Plantar warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are typically found on the soles of the feet. They are an infection of the skin caused by the virus and are somewhat common in children and teens, but can affect people of all ages.
HPV is spread via direct contact with the skin — most commonly from bare feet in public showers or pool areas. The virus has a long incubation period (1–20 months), and initially can look and feel like a simple callus on the sole of the foot. One defining feature is the appearance of small, black circular dots just beneath the skin surface — these are blood vessels feeding the wart.
Plantar warts can multiply quickly on the surrounding area and should be treated promptly by a podiatrist for best outcomes.
